You reach Waterfront Station, then hesitate… which exit actually leads to Canada Place?

You come up from the train at Waterfront Station, and for a moment everything feels open-ended. Signs point in several directions. One path heads toward the city streets, another toward the waterfront. You pause, just long enough to wonder if you’re about to walk the wrong way.

That hesitation is normal here. The station connects multiple lines, levels, and exits. The key is choosing the right direction early so you don’t loop back.

Once you commit toward the waterfront side, the route settles quickly.

Getting to Canada Place

Canada Place sits directly along the harbor, slightly west of Waterfront Station. Almost every route converges here, but the final approach matters more than the transport itself.

If you’re coming from the airport or downtown, aim for Waterfront Station first. From there, the last few minutes decide everything.

Nearest station

The closest and most useful station is Waterfront Station.

This is not a simple station. It connects:

  • Canada Line (airport route)
  • Expo Line (SkyTrain)
  • SeaBus (across the harbor)
  • West Coast Express (commuter rail)

Platforms are separated by level, and exits are not symmetrical.

If unsure, stay inside the station and follow overhead signs rather than exiting early.

From Vancouver International Airport (YVR)

Take the Canada Line toward Waterfront.

You don’t need to think about transfers. Just stay on until the final stop.

Travel time is usually around 25 minutes, but what matters more is what happens at the end.

When the train arrives at Waterfront, most people get off. The platform feels busy, but movement is smooth.

Platform awareness tip:
Stand near the middle of the train if possible. This usually aligns better with escalators going up.

After exiting the train:

  • Follow signs for “Waterfront Station” exits
  • Stay inside, do not go outside yet
  • Look for directions pointing to “Convention Centre” or “Canada Place”

If you find yourself heading toward city streets too early, pause and turn back inside. That’s the most common small mistake.

From Waterfront Station (central arrival)

If you are already at Waterfront Station, the challenge is not distance but direction.

There are multiple exits, and they do not all feel equally “correct.”

Choose the exit that leads toward:

  • Convention Centre West
  • Waterfront / Harbor

Avoid exits pointing toward Gastown or downtown streets unless you know your bearings.

Decision rule:
If you see glass structures and open waterfront space ahead, you are on the right track.

By metro / train / bus / taxi

Option Transfers Time Difficulty Best for
Canada Line 0 ~25 min Easy Airport arrivals
Expo Line 0–1 ~10–20 min Easy Within city
Bus 1+ ~20–40 min Medium Flexible routes
Taxi / ride-hailing 0 ~20–35 min Very easy Door-to-door

The metro is usually the most predictable. Buses can vary depending on traffic and stops.

If carrying luggage, staying on rail routes reduces friction.

Walking the final stretch

This is where small decisions matter.

From Waterfront Station, the walk takes about 5–8 minutes.

Once you pass through the correct exit, the environment changes quickly:

  • The space opens up
  • Buildings become more modern and glass-heavy
  • You start to feel the harbor air

You may briefly feel like you’re walking slightly away from the water at first. That’s normal. The path curves gently.

Keep moving toward the large glass convention building ahead. This is your intermediate anchor.

As you walk past it, the view opens.

Then comes the confirmation moment:

You’ll see the distinctive white sail-like roof structures rising along the waterfront.

At that point, you know you’re exactly where you need to be.

A small “wrong feeling” moment

Some people exit too early and end up on regular city streets with traffic and office buildings.

If that happens:

  • You won’t see water
  • You won’t see glass convention structures
  • The space feels enclosed

That’s your signal.

Turn back toward the station entrance and choose a waterfront-facing exit instead.

Common mistakes

  • Exiting too early toward downtown streets
→ Go back inside and follow signs for the waterfront or convention centre
  • Following crowd flow without checking direction
→ Crowds split here. Always check overhead signs
  • Going outside before confirming direction
→ Stay inside the station until you see clear signage
  • Expecting immediate waterfront views
→ The route curves slightly before opening up

If you get lost (reset via Granville Station)

  1. Return to Granville Station
  2. Take the Expo Line toward Waterfront
  3. Get off at Waterfront Station and restart the final walk

Final tips

Give yourself an extra 10–15 minutes buffer the first time. The station layout can slow you down slightly.

Stay inside the station until you are confident about direction. It’s easier to correct your path before exiting.

Once you see the white sails, you can relax. The route becomes obvious from there.
