You step out of the subway expecting to “see the park,” but instead you’re standing on a quiet Toronto street. Cars pass, trees line the sidewalk, and for a moment, it’s not obvious where the entrance is.
This is where people hesitate.
High Park is large, and depending on which station you choose, the first few minutes either feel effortless or slightly uncertain. Some exits face the park directly. Others don’t. That difference matters more than it looks on a map.
Once you choose the right station and exit, everything becomes simple.
Nearest station
Two stations are commonly used:
- High Park Station
- Keele Station
Both are on Line 2 Bloor–Danforth.
If you want the most direct and stress-free arrival, choose High Park Station.
When you exit here, the park is immediately in front of you. There’s no need to cross major roads or guess directions.
Keele Station is also close, but you’ll need to orient yourself slightly after exiting, and the entrance is not as immediately obvious.
If unsure, choose High Park Station.
From Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ)
Start with the UP Express.
Board the UP Express at the airport and ride to Union Station. The journey is smooth and clearly signposted.
At Union, the route becomes more layered.
You’ll need to transfer to the subway:
- Follow signs to Line 1 Yonge–University
- Take a northbound train
- Ride to St George Station
At St George, transfer:
- Move to Line 2 Bloor–Danforth
- Take a westbound train
- Get off at High Park Station
The transfer at St George is straightforward but slightly busy. Platforms are connected, but you may need to follow signs carefully through a short corridor.
Once you board Line 2 westbound, the ride is short and steady.
From Toronto Union Station
If you’re starting at Union Station, the process is simpler.
- Enter Line 1 Yonge–University
- Take a northbound train
- Get off at St George Station
Then:
- Transfer to Line 2 westbound
- Ride to High Park Station
Pay attention to direction at the platform.
At Union, trains run in both directions, and it’s easy to step onto the wrong one if you’re not checking signage. Take a moment before boarding.
By metro / train / bus / taxi
| Option | Transfers | Time | Difficulty | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UP Express + Subway | 2 | 45–55 min | Medium | Airport arrivals |
| Subway only | 1 | 20–30 min | Low | Downtown travel |
| Surface (bus/streetcar) | 0–1 | 25–40 min | Medium | Nearby areas |
| Taxi / Uber | 0 | 25–50 min | Low | Direct travel |
Subway
The subway is the most reliable option.
Focus on two decisions:
- Northbound on Line 1
- Westbound on Line 2
Once you lock those directions, the route becomes predictable.
Surface routes
Buses and streetcars can reach the area, but stops are less intuitive if you’re unfamiliar with Toronto. They require more attention to landmarks.
Taxi / Uber
A drop-off near Parkside Drive or Bloor Street West works well. Travel time varies with traffic, especially during busy hours.
Walking the final stretch
From High Park Station, this is where everything becomes clear.
Take an exit that leads toward the park side of the street.
As you step outside, pause briefly.
In front of you, you should see a stretch of green space opening up, framed by stone entrance gates. The atmosphere shifts immediately from city street to park edge.
That’s your confirmation.
Walk forward toward the gates and continue inside.
The transition is noticeable. The noise of traffic fades slightly, the path widens, and the space opens into trees and walking trails.
If instead you exit and see only buildings or a long stretch of road without visible greenery, you likely took the wrong exit. Turn back and choose another exit toward the park side.
The walk itself is only a few minutes, but choosing the correct direction at the start makes all the difference.
Common mistakes
Getting off at Keele without a clear direction
Fix: If unsure, use High Park Station instead
Taking the wrong direction on Line 1 at Union
Fix: Always confirm northbound before boarding
Missing the transfer at St George
Fix: Follow Line 2 signs carefully; don’t rush through the station
Exiting the station on the wrong side
Fix: Look for exits facing visible greenery or park space
If you get lost
Use Bloor–Yonge Station as your reset point.
- Return to Bloor–Yonge Station
- Take Line 2 westbound toward High Park
- Get off at High Park Station and restart
Final tips
Give yourself a few extra minutes for the transfer at St George. It’s straightforward, but can feel busy the first time.
If you don’t see the park immediately after exiting, stop and recheck rather than continuing in the wrong direction.
And once you see the green space and stone gates ahead, you can relax. You’re exactly where you need to be.
