The most practical public-transport route from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata Port Tower is to take the Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line to Hakata Station, then use a Nishitetsu bus to Hakata Futoh (Bayside Place). From the International Terminal, first take the free inter-terminal shuttle to the Domestic Terminal, where the subway station is located.
From the Hakata side, buses 46 and 99 run from Nishinippon City Bank-mae F toward Hakata Futoh. Get off at the terminal stop, Hakata Futoh (Bayside Place), which is beside the waterfront complex and Hakata Port Tower. Bus 88 toward Chuo Futoh is another official option; get off at International Conference Center Sun Palace-mae and walk about five minutes to Bayside Place Hakata.
Tenjin also works as the city transfer point. From Tenjin Solaria Stage-mae, platform 2A, bus 90 goes to Hakata Futoh (Bayside Place). Bus 80 toward Chuo Futoh stops at International Center / Sun Palace-mae, about five minutes away on foot. Use Tenjin when your hotel, shopping plans, or evening destination are already there. For a direct airport arrival with no reason to stop in Tenjin, Hakata Station is usually the clearer transfer.
Use Bayside Place Hakata as the harbor-side arrival anchor. Hakata Port Tower stands beside the complex, while Hakata Futoh can also refer to ferry terminals, ticket counters, piers, and other port facilities. Entering only “Fukuoka harbor” into a map can produce the wrong arrival point.
Hakata Port Tower is also different from Fukuoka Tower. Hakata Port Tower is the red harbor tower beside Bayside Place Hakata in Chikko Honmachi. Fukuoka Tower is the much taller seaside tower in Momochihama, Sawara Ward. The two attractions require different airport routes.
The Hakata Port Tower observation room is 70 metres above ground and provides a 360-degree view over Hakata Port and the surrounding city. Admission to both the observation room and the first-floor Hakata Port Bayside Museum is free. Current opening hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with admission ending at 7:40 p.m. The regular closing day is Wednesday, or the following weekday when Wednesday is a public holiday. The tower is also closed from December 29 through January 3.
Bayside Place Hakata Is the Anchor for This Harbor Route
Bayside Place Hakata is at 13-6 Chikko Honmachi, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka. It is the most useful arrival point for visitors going to Hakata Port Tower because the tower, waterfront promenade, passenger terminals, aquarium, restaurants, shops, and Namiha no Yu are grouped within the same harbor area.
The name Hakata Futoh can refer to more than one purpose. A visitor may be going to:
- Hakata Port Tower
- Bayside Place Hakata
- Hakata Futoh Passenger Terminal
- A ferry ticket counter
- A particular pier
- Bayside Aquarium
- Namiha no Yu
- The Fukuoka International Congress Center or Sun Palace side
These destinations are close, but the correct bus stop and first building depend on what you need to do after arrival.
For Hakata Port Tower and the central Bayside Place area, Hakata Futoh (Bayside Place) is the most direct bus stop. The bus terminates beside the complex, so you do not need a separate walk from the convention-centre district.
International Conference Center Sun Palace-mae and International Center / Sun Palace-mae are useful alternatives when the bus schedule makes routes 88 or 80 more practical. From either stop, follow the official access route toward Bayside Place Hakata. The listed walk is approximately five minutes.
Do not use Bayside Place as the destination when you actually mean Fukuoka Tower, Momochi Seaside Park, or another attraction on the western coast of the city. Fukuoka Tower is at 2-3-26 Momochihama in Sawara Ward and is normally reached through the Momochi side of Fukuoka, not Hakata Futoh.
A ferry journey also requires separate confirmation. The Hakata Futoh Terminal 1 ticket counter is inside the first floor of Building C, but ferry departure points, routes, boarding deadlines, and schedules vary. Reaching Bayside Place does not automatically mean you have reached the correct counter or pier for a particular boat.
Choose Hakata Station for the Clearest Airport-to-Harbor Transfer
The Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line runs directly from Fukuoka Airport Station to Hakata Station. The sequence begins with Fukuoka Airport, Higashi-Hie, and Hakata, so Hakata is the first major central station after leaving the airport. No subway transfer is required.
After leaving the subway at Hakata Station, move toward the Hakata-guchi, or Hakata Exit, side rather than the Chikushi Exit side. The Bayside Place access instructions use the Nishinippon City Bank-mae F bus stop, located on the Hakata-side station area.
From Nishinippon City Bank-mae F, use one of these official routes:
- Bus 46 or 99 toward Hakata Futoh: get off at the final stop, Hakata Futoh (Bayside Place).
- Bus 88 toward Chuo Futoh: get off at International Conference Center Sun Palace-mae and walk about five minutes.
The stop name matters. Hakata Futoh (Bayside Place) places you directly beside the waterfront complex. The convention-centre stop leaves you farther east, although it remains a practical alternative when its bus arrives first or fits your schedule better.
Choose Hakata Station when:
- You are coming directly from the Domestic Terminal subway station.
- You have a hotel near Hakata Station.
- You need to leave luggage at the station or hotel.
- You intend to return to Hakata after the harbor visit.
- You want the shortest subway segment before changing to a bus.
- Tenjin is not otherwise part of your plans.
Allow time to find the correct surface bus stop. Hakata Station is a large rail, subway, shopping, and bus district. Leaving through the wrong side does not prevent you from reaching Bayside Place, but it can add a long walk around the station buildings.
Check the live Nishitetsu timetable before boarding. Route numbers and official destination names are useful for identifying the service, but departure frequency can vary by weekday, time, events, and traffic conditions.
A taxi from Hakata Station is a reasonable alternative when you have suitcases, travel with several people, or are close to the tower’s final admission time. Bayside Place lists the drive from Hakata Station as approximately 15 minutes, although central traffic can change the actual journey.
Choose Tenjin When Your Hotel or Plans Are Already There
The Airport Line also runs directly from Fukuoka Airport through Hakata, Gion, and Nakasu-Kawabata to Tenjin. No subway transfer is required from the Domestic Terminal.
From Tenjin, use the Tenjin Solaria Stage-mae bus stop, platform 2A. The official Bayside Place routes are:
- Bus 90 toward Hakata Futoh: get off at the final stop, Hakata Futoh (Bayside Place).
- Bus 80 toward Chuo Futoh: get off at International Center / Sun Palace-mae and walk about five minutes.
Bus 90 provides the closest arrival for Hakata Port Tower. Bus 80 is useful when its departure fits your timing better or when you are also visiting the convention-centre side.
Tenjin is the better handoff when:
- Your accommodation is in Tenjin.
- You need to leave luggage at a Tenjin hotel.
- You are shopping or eating in Tenjin before or after the tower.
- The harbor visit belongs in the middle of a Tenjin-based day.
- You plan to return to Tenjin in the evening.
- Bus 90 or 80 fits your schedule better than the Hakata services.
Travelling through Tenjin is less efficient when you are coming directly from the airport and intend to return to Hakata afterward. In that case, continuing past Hakata to Tenjin and then riding back toward the harbor creates an avoidable bend in the journey.
Tenjin’s streets contain several bus stops with similar names. Use Tenjin Solaria Stage-mae, platform 2A, rather than assuming that any Tenjin bus stop serves Hakata Futoh.
Bayside Place lists an approximate driving time of ten minutes from Nishitetsu Fukuoka or Subway Tenjin Station. Bus travel may take longer because of stops and city traffic.
From the International Terminal, Take the Shuttle Before the Subway
Fukuoka Airport’s subway station is connected to the Domestic Terminal. Passengers arriving at the International Terminal must first use the free inter-terminal shuttle bus to reach the Domestic Terminal side.
The shuttle departs from the first-floor bus stop outside the International Terminal. Fukuoka Airport gives an approximate terminal-to-terminal journey time of ten minutes, although traffic around the airport can make it longer. Services normally run frequently throughout the day.
The complete route is:
- Leave the International Terminal arrivals area.
- Board the free shuttle bus to the Domestic Terminal.
- Follow signs for Fukuoka City Subway.
- Take the Airport Line toward Hakata and Tenjin.
- Get off at Hakata or Tenjin according to your bus route.
- Continue by Nishitetsu bus to Hakata Futoh or the convention-centre stop.
- Walk into Bayside Place Hakata and continue to Hakata Port Tower.
Do not calculate the arrival-day visit from the subway journey alone. International immigration, baggage collection, customs, the shuttle wait, terminal transfer, subway journey, bus connection, and city traffic all come before the tower entrance.
Hakata Station is generally the safer transfer when the tower is the first destination after an international flight. It reduces the subway stage and gives you the option of leaving luggage before continuing.
Tenjin remains useful when your hotel is there or you need to check in first. Going to the hotel before the tower can be the better decision when you have large luggage, even though it lengthens the total journey.
A late international arrival may not leave enough time for the observation room. Admission ends at 7:40 p.m. Reaching Bayside Place after that time still allows you to see the harbor area and illuminated tower exterior, but not the indoor observation deck.
Check Whether You Mean the Tower, Hakata Futoh, or a Ferry
Hakata Port Tower is a sightseeing destination. Hakata Futoh is also an operating passenger-port area. Confirm the first place you need before selecting the bus and setting a map destination.
For the tower view
Use Hakata Port Tower or Bayside Place Hakata as the destination. Get off at Hakata Futoh (Bayside Place) when using buses 46, 99, or 90.
The observation room is 70 metres above ground and provides a 360-degree panorama. Admission is free. The first-floor Hakata Port Bayside Museum is also free.
For a ferry
Check the official operator information for:
- Departure terminal
- Building
- Ticket counter
- Pier
- Destination
- Boarding deadline
- Current timetable
- Luggage rules
The Terminal 1 ticket counter is inside Building C, but not every ferry-related journey uses the same counter or boarding point.
For the convention-centre district
International Conference Center Sun Palace-mae and International Center / Sun Palace-mae may be suitable stops for Fukuoka International Congress Center, Fukuoka Sunpalace, and the eastern side of the waterfront district.
They can also be used for Hakata Port Tower, but they leave an additional walk. Do not get off there merely because “international” appears in the stop name.
For Fukuoka Tower
Do not travel to Hakata Futoh. Fukuoka Tower is in Momochihama and uses different bus routes and stops, such as Fukuoka Tower or Fukuoka Tower Minamiguchi.
Do Not Miss the Tower Hours
Hakata Port Tower is an indoor observation facility, not an unrestricted outdoor viewpoint. The current official hours are:
- Opening: 10:00 a.m.
- Closing: 8:00 p.m.
- Final admission: 7:40 p.m.
- Regular closing day: Wednesday
- When Wednesday is a public holiday: the following weekday is closed
- Year-end closure: December 29 through January 3
Admission to the observation room and first-floor museum is free.
A flight landing in the late afternoon does not guarantee enough time. Account for:
- Leaving the aircraft
- Baggage collection
- International immigration and customs, when applicable
- The International Terminal shuttle
- The subway journey
- Finding the correct bus stop
- Waiting for the bus
- Traffic toward Hakata Futoh
- Walking into the tower
- The 7:40 p.m. admission deadline
When your expected arrival is close to final admission, leave luggage at the hotel or station and use a taxi for the last city leg. Public transport remains possible, but one missed connection can remove the tower visit from the itinerary.
If you arrive after final admission, Bayside Place may still have open restaurants or other facilities, and the tower exterior may be illuminated. Business hours vary by tenant, so check each facility separately. The general Bayside Place information currently lists restaurants up to around 10:00 p.m., shops around 8:00 p.m., and Namiha no Yu until 11:00 p.m., with individual variations.
Weather also affects the value of the observation deck. The facility may be open while rain, haze, or low clouds reduce visibility over Hakata Bay. Check the forecast before making the tower the main reason for a long arrival-day detour.
Do Not Build the Airport Route Around the Free Shuttle With Suitcases
Bayside Place operates a free shuttle from Tenjin and Hakata on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. It can be useful for a weekend visit, but it is not a reliable default airport connection.
The current rules state:
- Large luggage and suitcases are not allowed.
- Only items that fit on your lap may be carried.
- Reservations are not accepted.
- The service is for Bayside Place users.
- It must not be used as a general sightseeing or city-circulation bus.
- Passengers boarding in Tenjin cannot get off at Hakata Station.
- There are no standard bus-stop signs or formal queuing areas.
- Services can be delayed or cancelled by weather or road conditions.
- The bus may be full, particularly on weekends and holidays.
The current schedule introduced in December 2025 gives several daytime departures. The journey is listed at approximately 30 minutes from Tenjin via Hakata and approximately 15 minutes from Hakata to Bayside Place. Times can change, and the bus may leave slightly early when stopping conditions require it.
Use the shuttle only when:
- You are travelling on a weekend or public holiday.
- You have checked that it is operating that day.
- You have no suitcase or other large luggage.
- You can identify the unofficial stopping position.
- Missing the bus will not cause you to miss tower admission.
- You are visiting Bayside Place rather than using it for city transport.
For most airport arrivals, the regular subway-and-Nishitetsu-bus route is easier to recover when timing changes. A taxi is safer when you have luggage or a strict admission deadline.
When a Taxi Is More Practical
A taxi from Fukuoka Airport may be preferable when:
- You have several suitcases.
- You are travelling as a family or group.
- You land close to final tower admission.
- You have limited mobility.
- Heavy rain makes the subway-to-bus transfer unattractive.
- You need to visit the tower before hotel check-in.
- You are continuing directly to a ferry with a fixed boarding time.
Enter Bayside Place Hakata or Hakata Port Tower as the destination. Do not enter only “Fukuoka harbor,” because that may lead to another terminal, pier, or waterfront facility.
Traffic conditions can vary around central Fukuoka and the port district. Do not rely on a fixed airport-to-tower driving time. For a time-sensitive visit, check the route estimate after landing and compare it with the 7:40 p.m. final admission time.
A taxi can also be useful for the return. Evening bus intervals and event traffic may make returning to Hakata or Tenjin slower than expected, particularly when large events are taking place near Marine Messe, Fukuoka International Congress Center, or Fukuoka Sunpalace.
After the Harbor View
Bayside Place Hakata provides several options without requiring another bus journey.
Bayside Aquarium
The cylindrical aquarium is inside Building C. The official facility information describes approximately 3,000 fish from more than 30 species in a tank about nine metres in diameter and eight metres high. It is a useful indoor stop before or after the tower.
Namiha no Yu
Namiha no Yu is the hot-spring facility beside the waterfront complex. Current facility information lists general opening hours of 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., although individual services and admission conditions should be checked separately.
Restaurants and shops
Bayside Place contains restaurants, cafés, shops, and a market. Hours vary by tenant. This can make the harbor area a practical meal stop when the tower closes before the rest of your evening plans.
Passenger terminals
Continue to a ferry terminal only when you have confirmed the route and departure information. The presence of ticket counters and piers does not mean that a suitable sightseeing boat or ferry will be departing when you arrive.
Return to Hakata or Tenjin
Use the bus stop and direction that return you to your actual hotel or next destination. Do not automatically reverse the airport route if you are finishing the evening elsewhere.
Return to Hakata when:
- Your hotel is near Hakata Station.
- You need JR services.
- You stored luggage at Hakata.
- You are continuing to another city.
Return to Tenjin when:
- Your hotel is in Tenjin.
- You have dinner or shopping plans there.
- You are continuing through the central entertainment district.
- Your next subway journey begins more naturally from Tenjin.
On weekends and holidays, the free Bayside shuttle may be available, but it can fill and does not accept large luggage. Keep the regular Nishitetsu bus or taxi as the backup.
