If you are going from Kansai Airport to Nijo Castle, take the JR Haruka to Kyoto Station, normally about 75 minutes, then take the Karasuma Line toward Kokusaikaikan to Karasuma Oike and change to the Tozai Line toward Nijo / Uzumasa Tenjingawa for Nijojo-mae Station. Kyoto Station is the airport-to-city transfer point; Nijojo-mae is the subway station identified with Nijo-jo Castle.
Reaching Kyoto Station does not finish the journey to Nijo Castle. Continue to Nijojo-mae on the Tozai Line; JR Nijo Station is a different station and should only be used when it fits a separate JR, hotel, or onward-travel plan.
If you arrive from KIX with limited time, check your arrival against the castle’s current visitor hours before leaving the airport. General admission is from 8:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with the castle closing at 5:00 p.m. Ninomaru Palace reception runs until 4:10 p.m. and is normally closed on Tuesdays in July and August, subject to official holiday exceptions. Honmaru Palace reception runs until 4:00 p.m. and requires advance reservation.
Use Haruka to Kyoto Station, take the Karasuma Line toward Kokusaikaikan to Karasuma Oike, then change to the Tozai Line toward Nijo / Uzumasa Tenjingawa for Nijojo-mae. Consider a taxi from Kyoto Station when luggage, weather, children, or your hotel location makes the Karasuma Oike transfer less suitable.
Why Kyoto Station Is Only the Handoff for Nijo Castle
Kyoto Station is the first rail destination from Kansai International Airport because JR Haruka connects KIX with Kyoto directly. Kansai Airport’s official access information lists the Airport Express Haruka journey to Kyoto at about 75 minutes.
Kyoto Station is not the final station for Nijo Castle. The journey has two parts: KIX to Kyoto Station, then Kyoto Station through Karasuma Oike to Nijojo-mae.
From Kyoto Station, continue by subway rather than treating the airport rail journey as complete. The Karasuma Line takes you to Karasuma Oike, where you change to the Tozai Line for Nijojo-mae.
Kyoto Station is K11 on the Karasuma Line. Travel toward Kokusaikaikan to Karasuma Oike K08/T13, change there to the Tozai Line toward Nijo / Uzumasa Tenjingawa, and get off at Nijojo-mae T14, which Kyoto City Subway identifies with Nijo-jo Castle.
Use Kyoto Station for the Haruka-to-subway transfer, then continue to Nijojo-mae for Nijo-jo Castle.
Change at Karasuma Oike Before You Aim for the Castle Side
From Kyoto Station, take the Karasuma Line toward Kokusaikaikan to Karasuma Oike. At Karasuma Oike, change to the Tozai Line toward Nijo / Uzumasa Tenjingawa; Nijojo-mae is the next station.
Nijo Castle is not on the Karasuma Line. The change at Karasuma Oike moves you from the north-south Karasuma Line onto the east-west Tozai Line serving Nijojo-mae.
Karasuma Oike is the transfer station, not the destination. Change there from the Karasuma Line to the Tozai Line and continue one stop to Nijojo-mae.
The subway keeps the Kyoto Station-to-Nijojo-mae leg on rail and avoids relying on road traffic for that part of the journey. If you are using a valid Kyoto Subway One-Day Pass or Subway & Bus One-Day Pass on the day of your visit, Nijo-jo Castle currently gives a ¥100 discount on individual grounds admission; the adult grounds fee is reduced from ¥800 to ¥700.
If your hotel is near Karasuma Oike, Shijo, or another subway stop, dropping bags before the castle may still be convenient. Nijo Castle also provides storage for large luggage and suitcases at the main rest area, with coin lockers available both outside and inside the gate, so arriving with luggage does not automatically require a hotel stop first.
Nijojo-mae Is the Castle Station, Not JR Nijo
Nijojo-mae is T14 on the Tozai Line, and Kyoto City Subway explicitly marks the station with Nijo-jo Castle. From Karasuma Oike T13, take the train toward Nijo / Uzumasa Tenjingawa and get off at the next station.
JR Nijo Station can still appear in route searches, and it is not a fake option. The problem is that “Nijo” looks tempting because it sounds like the castle name. For many airport arrivals, that is not the same as choosing the most direct castle-side station.
Choosing JR Nijo instead of Nijojo-mae can leave you with an additional local journey toward the castle after you leave the train.
Use JR Nijo only when it fits a separate plan, such as a hotel, onward JR movement, or another destination west of the castle. Do not choose it just because the name is shorter and more familiar.
For the subway approach from Kansai Airport, use Nijojo-mae because Kyoto City Subway identifies it directly with Nijo-jo Castle. The sequence is KIX to Kyoto Station, Kyoto Station to Karasuma Oike, then Karasuma Oike to Nijojo-mae.
Bus 9 or 50 from Kyoto Station Avoids the Karasuma Oike Transfer
Kyoto City Bus 9 and 50 provide another way to continue from Kyoto Station to the Nijo Castle area. Both serve Nijojo-mae, so you can stay on one local bus from Kyoto Station instead of changing between the Karasuma and Tozai subway lines at Karasuma Oike.
The bus is useful when avoiding the subway transfer matters more than keeping the city leg on rail. It should not be treated as automatically faster: Kyoto City’s timetable warns that buses can be delayed by road conditions. If traffic is heavy or your castle entry time is close, the subway through Karasuma Oike keeps that part of the journey independent of road congestion.
When to Take a Taxi from Kyoto Station Instead of Changing at Karasuma Oike
A taxi from Kyoto Station removes the Karasuma Oike subway transfer. Consider it when you arrive from Kansai Airport with large suitcases, a tired group, rain, or a hotel check-in near the castle. For a taxi or map app, use the official address: 541 Nijojo-cho, Nijo-dori Horikawa Nishi-iru, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto 604-8301.
Nijo-jo Castle asks visitors to use public transport where possible. A taxi removes the subway transfer, but its travel time remains dependent on road traffic.
With light bags, the subway route continues through Karasuma Oike to Nijojo-mae. If you want to avoid that transfer without paying for a taxi, check City Bus 9 or 50 from Kyoto Station to Nijojo-mae. With large luggage, you can use the castle’s luggage storage, stop at your hotel first, or take a taxi from Kyoto Station if avoiding local public-transport transfers is more important.
Use a taxi when it solves a specific arrival problem such as large luggage, rain, a tired group, or a hotel stop near the castle.
If your next stop after Nijo Castle is Kyoto Imperial Palace, Karasuma Oike, Shijo, or another central Kyoto destination, remaining near the subway network can simplify the onward trip. If your next stop is a hotel west or north of the castle, compare that route with a direct taxi from the castle area.
Do Not Use the Osaka or Namba Route Unless Kyoto Is Not Your First Stop
Kansai Airport also has rail access toward Osaka and Namba, and Nankai serves the Namba side of Osaka. If Nijo Castle is your first destination, JR Haruka instead takes you directly from KIX to Kyoto Station before the subway connection to Nijojo-mae.
Routing through Osaka or Namba adds an Osaka leg before you still have to continue to Kyoto. If Nijo Castle is your first destination, compare that detour with the direct Haruka journey from KIX to Kyoto Station.
If Kyoto is your first city, take Haruka to Kyoto Station. From there, continue on the Karasuma Line to Karasuma Oike, change to the Tozai Line, and get off at Nijojo-mae.
Use the Osaka or Namba side only if you are actually staying in Osaka first, meeting someone there, or building a wider Kansai itinerary before Kyoto. Otherwise you are adding a city-level detour before the castle-side decision even begins.
After Nijo Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Nishiki Market, Karasuma Oike, or another Kyoto destination becomes a separate local journey. Plan that next leg from the castle area rather than continuing to route from Kansai Airport.
