“Kuala Lumpur Science Museum” is not the official name of one attraction. Two different places commonly fit that description: Petrosains, The Discovery Centre inside Suria KLCC, and Pusat Sains Negara, Malaysia’s National Science Centre in Bukit Kiara.

The location shown in your search result immediately tells you which one you have found. Level 4, Suria KLCC at the PETRONAS Twin Towers means Petrosains. Persiaran Bukit Kiara means Pusat Sains Negara.

They are not branches of the same museum. They have different operators, different locations, different ticket systems and different visiting patterns. There is also a third science-related institution, Planetarium Negara, which is devoted specifically to astronomy and space science.

As of August 28, 2026, one more distinction is important: Pusat Sains Negara Kuala Lumpur is temporarily closed for renovation from August 24 through November 1, 2026. Anyone looking for an operating general science centre in central Kuala Lumpur during that period will therefore find Petrosains the immediately available option.

Petrosains is the science centre inside Suria KLCC

Petrosains, The Discovery Centre occupies Level 4 of Suria KLCC, the shopping complex beneath the PETRONAS Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

This is the science attraction connected with searches such as “science museum KLCC,” “Petronas science museum,” or “science museum in Petronas Towers.” Its location is part of its identity: Petrosains is not somewhere near KLCC that happens to use the PETRONAS name. It is physically inside Suria KLCC.

The centre focuses on interactive science and technology. Current galleries and experiences cover subjects including space, chemistry and nanotechnology, robotics and coding, Earth science, dinosaurs and energy. The PETRONAS connection is also visible in exhibits related to energy and the petroleum industry.

That makes Petrosains particularly easy to combine with a day already centred on KLCC, the PETRONAS Twin Towers, Suria KLCC or KLCC Park. You do not have to leave the city-centre complex and travel to a separate museum district.

Inside Suria KLCC, Petrosains directs visitors to the Centre Court glass lift for Level 4. That detail separates the actual attraction from the much broader PETRONAS Twin Towers destination: arriving at the towers or the mall does not mean you have reached the science centre entrance.

Petrosains also operates timed admission. Its current ticket information states that online admission tickets should be purchased at least 24 hours before the visit, subject to availability, and visitors should be at the entrance before their assigned entry time. Credit cards, debit cards, American Express and several electronic payment methods are accepted.

Pusat Sains Negara is the National Science Centre in Bukit Kiara

Pusat Sains Negara translates directly as National Science Centre. It is a government institution under Malaysia’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation rather than part of PETRONAS.

Its Kuala Lumpur site is at Persiaran Bukit Kiara, 50662 Kuala Lumpur, well away from Suria KLCC.

That geographic difference is substantial. Someone who searches for a “Kuala Lumpur science museum” and saves a result in Bukit Kiara has not found another name for Petrosains. They have selected an entirely different science centre.

Pusat Sains Negara describes more than 1,000 interactive exhibits across twelve galleries. The centre is designed around hands-on science education and self-directed learning, giving it the character of a national public science institution rather than a science attraction embedded in a major shopping and tourism complex.

Its transport setting also reflects that difference. The official visitor guidance directs public-transport users to Semantan MRT Station, followed by feeder bus T818 or T852 to Pusat Sains Negara. Petrosains, by contrast, sits directly inside one of Kuala Lumpur’s main central commercial and visitor districts.

The distinction is therefore larger than “two science museums with different exhibits.” One is a KLCC attraction inside Suria KLCC; the other is a separate government science campus in Bukit Kiara.

Pusat Sains Negara is temporarily closed in late 2026

The National Science Centre’s online ticketing system currently states that Pusat Sains Negara Kuala Lumpur is closed for renovation from August 24, 2026 through November 1, 2026.

This closure applies to the Kuala Lumpur centre in Bukit Kiara. It should not be confused with Petrosains, which has its own operating calendar at Suria KLCC.

The closure also explains why current search results can be misleading if they show both institutions without emphasizing their status. Pusat Sains Negara remains a genuine Kuala Lumpur science attraction and retains its official website and ticketing system, but it is not currently available for a normal visit during the renovation period.

After the renovation period, check the official National Science Centre site before travelling rather than relying on an older attraction listing. The centre publishes both planned closures and visitor information through its own ticketing system.

Petrosains has a different calendar, including specified closure dates during the year, so its official admission page should also be checked for the date you intend to visit.

“Science museum” is an informal label here

Neither major institution is formally named “Kuala Lumpur Science Museum.”

A result mentioning Bukit Kiara, Persiaran Bukit Kiara or Pusat Sains Negara is the National Science Centre.

Their ticket systems are very different

The two centres also operate on different admission models.

Petrosains uses timed admission and publishes separate Malaysian and general-admission rates. Its current system accepts standard bank cards and several electronic payment methods, which is comparatively familiar for international visitors buying tickets online.

Pusat Sains Negara publishes much lower general admission prices through its official site. Its online ticketing system, however, currently states that online payment requires a Malaysian local-bank payment method or DuitNow and does not accept Visa, Mastercard or American Express through that system.

The National Science Centre also states that tickets can be obtained at its ticket counter during normal operations. For an overseas visitor after the centre reopens, that difference is worth checking before relying on the online booking process.

The admission systems therefore should not be treated as interchangeable simply because both attractions cover science. A Petrosains booking does not relate to Pusat Sains Negara, and the National Science Centre ticket portal does not sell admission for Petrosains.

Planetarium Negara is a separate third institution

Kuala Lumpur also has Planetarium Negara, the National Planetarium, at 53 Jalan Perdana within the Perdana Botanical Garden area.

It is neither Petrosains nor Pusat Sains Negara.

Planetarium Negara is operated under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and focuses specifically on astronomy and space science, including exhibitions and planetarium programmes.

This becomes relevant when a search for science attractions in Kuala Lumpur returns three names. Petrosains is the interactive science centre at KLCC, Pusat Sains Negara is the National Science Centre in Bukit Kiara, and Planetarium Negara is the astronomy-focused institution near Perdana Botanical Garden.

Someone primarily interested in general hands-on science is therefore looking at a different category of visit from someone specifically searching for a planetarium, astronomy exhibition or space-science programme.
