Searching for Kuala Lumpur Botanic Garden, Lake Gardens, Perdana Lake Gardens, Taman Tasik Perdana, or Perdana Botanical Garden can lead to pages that appear to describe different places. In central Kuala Lumpur, these names largely trace back to the same historic park. Its current official name is Taman Botani Perdana, or Perdana Botanical Garden. Kuala Lumpur City Hall says the park was formerly known as Taman Tasik Perdana or Lake Garden and was rebranded as Taman Botani Perdana in 2011.
The complication is that “Lake Gardens” is still used more loosely than the current official name. Older travel material and even some current attractions use Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens for the broader green district around Perdana Botanical Garden. KL Bird Park, for example, describes itself as being in the Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens, while Kuala Lumpur City Hall lists the Bird Park, Planetarium and National Museum as places near Taman Botani Perdana rather than as ordinary garden features. Tourism Malaysia places these attractions within the wider Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park.
That distinction matters when planning a visit. A map result labelled Lake Gardens may refer to the botanical garden itself, to the old name of the park, or more broadly to the surrounding heritage and attraction district. Perdana Botanical Garden / Taman Botani Perdana is the clearest current name for the municipal botanical garden itself.
Lake Gardens became Taman Botani Perdana
The different names come from the park’s history rather than from several botanical gardens occupying the same site.
The gardens date to the late nineteenth century. The site was originally developed as a recreational garden and became widely known as Lake Gardens. It was later called Taman Tasik Perdana, a Malay name that also appears in older addresses and travel references. In 2011, the park was rebranded as Taman Botani Perdana as Kuala Lumpur developed it more explicitly as a botanical garden.
This explains why an older hotel page may say “Lake Gardens,” a map may show “Perdana Botanical Gardens,” and a Malay-language source may use “Taman Botani Perdana.” They are not necessarily directing you to three separate parks.
The older terminology has not disappeared. KL Bird Park still gives its address as Taman Tasik Perdana and describes its location as Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens. Tourism material also commonly adds “KL Lake Gardens” in parentheses after Perdana Botanical Gardens.
For current destination identification, however, DBKL’s name is Taman Botani Perdana. Searching that name or Perdana Botanical Garden Kuala Lumpur is less ambiguous than relying on Lake Gardens alone.
The botanical garden and Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park are not identical names
A second source of ambiguity is the larger green and cultural precinct surrounding the garden.
Tourism Malaysia describes Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park as a broad area containing gardens, lakes, trails and several attractions. Its material names Perdana Botanical Gardens alongside KL Bird Park, Butterfly Park and other places within that wider heritage setting.
Perdana Botanical Garden is therefore a major component of this district, but the names should not automatically be treated as interchangeable. “Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park” can describe a wider sightseeing area; “Perdana Botanical Garden” identifies the municipal garden.
This becomes particularly relevant when looking at older maps. Attractions around the National Museum, National Mosque, Planetarium, Bird Park and the landscaped gardens are often visually grouped together. The Malaysian National Museum itself lists Perdana Botanical Gardens, the National Monument and Bird Park as nearby places, reinforcing that visitors are dealing with a cluster of neighboring attractions rather than one building or single admission-controlled complex.
The phrase Lake Gardens sits awkwardly between these two meanings. Historically it names the botanical garden. In tourism usage it can also evoke the broader recreational district around it. That is why two otherwise accurate sources can appear to give Lake Gardens a different size or list different attractions.
What DBKL actually lists inside Perdana Botanical Garden
Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s current description is useful for separating the botanical garden from the surrounding attraction cluster.
DBKL identifies features within Taman Botani Perdana including the Orchid Garden, Hibiscus Garden, Deer Park, Herb Garden, Taman Hikayat, Ethnobotany Garden, children’s play areas, recreational lake and jogging routes. It also describes the herbarium and botanical collections associated with the park.
These are part of the botanical-garden experience itself. Someone going to Perdana Botanical Garden for landscaped grounds, plants, lake scenery, walking or recreation does not need to interpret every attraction carrying a “Lake Gardens” address as another section of the botanical garden.
DBKL then describes KL Bird Park, Planetarium Negara and Muzium Negara as nearby attractions. That wording is a useful boundary marker: proximity within the same green district does not automatically make an attraction one of the botanical garden’s internal sections.
The distinction is particularly clear with KL Bird Park. Its own official site operates separately, has its own visitor information and ticket sales, and gives a Jalan Cenderawasih address in Taman Tasik Perdana. The Bird Park can therefore be geographically associated with Lake Gardens while still being an independent attraction rather than a free enclosure that comes automatically with a botanical-garden visit.
This is also why a proposed half-day at “Lake Gardens” can mean very different things. It might mean walking through Perdana Botanical Garden, or it might mean spending several hours combining the botanical garden with independently operated attractions in the surrounding heritage precinct.
“Kuala Lumpur Botanical Garden” can also point to the wrong city
The generic phrase botanical garden Kuala Lumpur creates another type of ambiguity because Greater Kuala Lumpur has several major botanical destinations.
The central Kuala Lumpur park discussed here is Perdana Botanical Garden / Taman Botani Perdana. Its DBKL address is in the Tasik Perdana area of Kuala Lumpur.
Putrajaya Botanical Garden, by contrast, is a different botanical garden in Putrajaya. Putrajaya Corporation describes it as a 92-hectare garden in Precinct 1 with its own themed plant collections, ethnobotanical areas and Moroccan Pavilion. It is not another name for Perdana Botanical Garden.
There is also National Botanic Gardens Shah Alam in Selangor, another separate destination outside central Kuala Lumpur. Shah Alam’s municipal tourism information identifies it in Section 8, Shah Alam.
This makes the word Perdana valuable when searching. Someone staying around KL Sentral or central Kuala Lumpur who wants the historic city botanical garden should look for Perdana Botanical Garden rather than selecting a result merely because it contains “Botanical Garden” and appears within the wider Klang Valley.
Lake Gardens does not mean KLCC Park or Titiwangsa Lake Gardens
“Lake Gardens” is also easy to read as a generic description rather than a historical proper name.
Kuala Lumpur has several prominent landscaped parks with lakes, including Titiwangsa and other municipal recreation areas. Perdana Botanical Garden’s old Lake Gardens name belongs specifically to this historic park near the National Museum and Kuala Lumpur’s heritage precinct. It is not a general label for every lake park in the city. DBKL’s current naming helps remove that ambiguity: Taman Botani Perdana identifies this particular site.
The same logic applies to KLCC Park. It is a different urban park beside the Petronas Twin Towers, not the modern name for Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens. A search result mentioning Lake Gardens in an older Kuala Lumpur itinerary is therefore much more likely to refer to what is now Perdana Botanical Garden than to KLCC Park.
This distinction becomes especially useful when reading older accommodation descriptions. “Near Lake Gardens” often means the western side of central Kuala Lumpur around the Perdana heritage area, whereas “near KLCC Park” places the traveler beside the Petronas Towers in a different part of the city.
Current DBKL information can differ sharply from older Lake Gardens guides
The name is not the only part of old Lake Gardens information that can become stale.
Many older travel pages still describe shorter daytime opening schedules. Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s current Taman Botani Perdana page states that the park opens daily from 5:30 a.m., closes at 10:00 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday, and remains open until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
That is a substantial difference from older listings that still show schedules such as 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. For current planning, the DBKL listing should take precedence over an old page that still calls the park Lake Gardens and has not been updated alongside the name and operating information.
The independently operated attractions around the gardens should be checked separately. The botanical garden’s hours do not establish the opening hours or admission conditions of KL Bird Park, museums or other attractions in the Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park area.
The result is a much cleaner way to interpret the names: Lake Gardens is the historical name that survived in everyday and tourism usage; Perdana Botanical Garden is the current municipal garden; Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park is the broader heritage and recreation district around it. Nearby attractions may belong to that district without being ordinary sections of the botanical garden.
