The easiest way to get to Design District Helsinki from Helsinki Airport is to take an I or P airport train to Helsinki Central Station, then continue toward the Architecture & Design Museum at Korkeavuorenkatu 23. The airport train takes about 30 minutes. From Central Station, finish the journey on foot, by tram, or by taxi depending on the current route and conditions.
The June 1–August 9 Ring Rail Line closure has ended. Since August 10, I and P services have largely returned to normal, and both train letters are again used between Helsinki Airport and Helsinki city centre. Some construction-related exceptions remain, so use the HSL Journey Planner to confirm the next connection to Helsinki Central Station before boarding.
Design District Helsinki is not one entrance or one building, so the safest first anchor is the Architecture & Design Museum at Korkeavuorenkatu 23. If you want to avoid walking from Central Station, continue by tram or taxi toward Korkeavuorenkatu 23. Check the HSL Journey Planner before using tram 10 because service beside the museum changes from August 31, 2026 during construction work.
Do not try to find a single “Design District entrance.” Treat the district as a central urban area and choose one clear first point inside it.
Use the Design Museum area as your first anchor
Design District Helsinki is an area, not a single attraction.
For the airport journey, use one concrete address inside the district before choosing where to explore next.
Use the Architecture & Design Museum at Korkeavuorenkatu 23 as the first concrete destination. The museum is in Kaartinkaupunki, in the heart of Helsinki’s Design District.
From the airport, the sequence is airport train → Helsinki Central Station → Korkeavuorenkatu 23. Once you reach the museum area, you are inside the central Design District.
The official Design District map now covers a wider network and was expanded toward Kallio in its 2026 edition. Korkeavuorenkatu 23 is therefore a practical starting point, not an entrance that defines the entire district. If Hietalahti Market Hall is your actual destination, follow the Hietalahti Market Hall from Helsinki Airport route instead, because its final approach uses tram 6 or the Kamppi side rather than the Korkeavuorenkatu museum anchor.
From Helsinki Airport, check the destination before taking the I or P train
From Helsinki Airport, follow signs to the train station below the terminal. The station is connected to both the arrivals and departures halls by lifts and escalators.
Buy an HSL ABC ticket before boarding. Helsinki Airport is in zone C and Helsinki Central Station is in zone A. An adult ABC single ticket costs €4.50 through the HSL app, with an HSL card, at a service point or from a ticket machine. The contactless adult fare is €4.80. The ticket is valid for 90 minutes and can also cover the final tram connection if it is still valid when you board.
Since August 10, 2026, I and P airport services have largely returned to their normal Ring Rail Line pattern. HSL again lists both I and P trains between Helsinki Airport and Helsinki city centre. Use the Journey Planner for the next departure to Helsinki Central Station because some summer construction exceptions remain.
The Myyrmäki–Huopalahti closure ended on August 10. Train service has resumed on that section, although some I and P operating patterns remain affected by construction through early October. Check the Journey Planner for the specific airport-to-Helsinki departure you plan to use.
I and P trains both serve the airport and Helsinki city centre around the Ring Rail Line. Until October 4, some I and P services still operate with construction-related exceptions, so check the current route and destination in the HSL Journey Planner before boarding.
Get off at Helsinki Central Station. From there, choose the final connection to Korkeavuorenkatu 23: walk, use the current tram service, or continue by taxi.
Helsinki Central Station is the city-centre handoff
Helsinki Central Station is the main city-centre handoff because I and P airport trains connect Helsinki Airport with central Helsinki.
It is not necessarily the closest possible stop to every corner of the Design District, but it is the most useful first-time anchor. From there, the city becomes easy to read: you are already central, and the Design District is a short onward move to the south and southeast.
From Helsinki Central Station, set Architecture & Design Museum, Korkeavuorenkatu 23 as the next destination before choosing the walking or tram route. If Ateneum Art Museum is your actual destination, use the Ateneum Art Museum from Helsinki Airport route instead because Ateneum is a different city-centre destination.
At Helsinki Central Station, choose one final mode to Korkeavuorenkatu 23 rather than searching for a single station that serves the entire Design District.
Use the Architecture & Design Museum at Korkeavuorenkatu 23 when you want a fixed starting point in the central Design District.
Walk from Central Station if the weather is good
The Architecture & Design Museum describes Korkeavuorenkatu 23 as a short walk from Helsinki city centre. If you choose to walk from Central Station, keep that full address as the destination.
Before leaving the station area, set your destination as Architecture & Design Museum, Korkeavuorenkatu 23. Do not enter only “Design District Helsinki,” because that can return individual member businesses in different parts of the city.
Follow the current pedestrian route from Helsinki Central Station to Architecture & Design Museum, Korkeavuorenkatu 23. If Market Square is your actual destination, follow the Helsinki Market Square from Helsinki Airport route toward the South Harbour instead. Near the museum, Johanneksenkirkko is the named tram stop directly in front of the main entrance.
Esplanadi is the most useful intermediate landmark. If Market Square is your actual destination, follow the Helsinki Market Square from Helsinki Airport route toward the South Harbour instead of turning south for Korkeavuorenkatu. On the final approach, look for the Korkeavuorenkatu street name and the Johanneksenkirkko tram stop. The stop is directly in front of the museum area.
Use Korkeavuorenkatu 23 to reach the central museum area first. Individual Design District members are spread across a much wider area, including the expanded 2026 map area toward Kallio.
Use a short onward connection if you have luggage or rain
If you prefer not to walk from Helsinki Central Station, continue toward the museum by tram or taxi.
Through August 30, 2026, tram 10 serves Ylioppilastalo and Johanneksenkirkko, and Johanneksenkirkko is directly in front of the museum’s main entrance. From August 31, tram 10B will replace tram 10 on this part of the route and terminate at Kolmikulma; Johanneksenkirkko will not be served during the approximately four-week construction diversion.
If the ABC ticket bought for the airport journey is still valid when you board the tram, the same ticket covers the transfer. Check its expiry time before purchasing another ticket.
For a taxi, give the full destination Architecture & Design Museum, Korkeavuorenkatu 23. The museum states that taxis may stop briefly in the courtyard behind the museum on Ullanlinnankatu, which is also where the accessible entrance is located.
Construction in front of the museum began on August 3, 2026. Pedestrian access remains open, and both the main entrance on Korkeavuorenkatu and the accessible courtyard entrance remain in normal use during the work.
Bus 600 reaches central Helsinki in about 40 minutes
Bus 600 connects Helsinki Airport with Helsinki city centre in approximately 40 minutes. The airport trains take about 30 minutes, so the train remains the faster scheduled public-transport connection under normal conditions.
The airport bus station is outside the terminal on the arrivals level. Bus 600 runs between the airport and Railway Square in central Helsinki, with a journey time of approximately 40 minutes. You need an ABC ticket.
Use Bus 600 if the train service is disrupted, the HSL Journey Planner shows it as the better live option, or you prefer bus travel.
After reaching central Helsinki, continue toward Korkeavuorenkatu 23 on foot, by taxi, or by the current tram connection. If you travel on or after August 31, check the Journey Planner because tram 10B terminates at Kolmikulma and Johanneksenkirkko is temporarily not served.
The train and Bus 600 both connect the airport with central Helsinki. The scheduled journey is approximately 30 minutes by train and 40 minutes by Bus 600, so compare the current departures in the HSL Journey Planner when choosing between them.
Do not force a metro-first route
The Metro is not a direct airport-to-Design-District route.
Design District Helsinki is central, walkable, and area-based. The airport does not have direct Metro service, while the airport train already brings you to Helsinki Central Station. Trying to force a Metro stop into the route adds a transfer without placing you at the Architecture & Design Museum.
Use the Metro only when your starting point elsewhere in Helsinki already makes it useful. From Helsinki Airport, I and P trains provide the direct rail connection to Helsinki Central Station.
Design District Helsinki covers many locations, while Korkeavuorenkatu 23 gives you one fixed address for the first arrival.
The final approach into Design District Helsinki
For the final approach, use Architecture & Design Museum, Korkeavuorenkatu 23.
Use Korkeavuorenkatu 23 as the practical target. Once you are near that address, the traditional central part of the district starts to make more sense on foot.
The main entrance remains on Korkeavuorenkatu, and the accessible entrance remains in the inner courtyard at Ullanlinnankatu 4 during the current construction work. Johanneksenkirkko is normally the nearest tram stop directly in front of the main entrance, but it will not be served from August 31 during the temporary tram 10B diversion to Kolmikulma.
Do not wait for one giant sign that says “Design District starts here.” You may not get that kind of arrival. This is a neighbourhood-style destination.
If you arrive at the wrong part of the district
The 2026 Design District map covers a broad area and now extends as far as Helsinginkatu in Kallio, so a Design District search result may be far from the Korkeavuorenkatu museum area.
The official Design District network now includes businesses beyond the traditional museum area. If your map sends you far from Korkeavuorenkatu, check whether you selected an individual member rather than the central anchor used in this route.
If you want to start at the Architecture & Design Museum, enter Korkeavuorenkatu 23 as the destination. If you have returned to Helsinki Central Station, choose a new walking, tram or taxi route from there using the current Journey Planner information.

Route comparison
